The Sentient Body – Course 4
Exploring the Sportsman’s
Anatomy
Understanding the body that creates
movement, balance, and performance
Before movement… there is organisation
This course shifts the focus inward
to the body that shapes everything you do.
Performance is not created through effort alone.
It is shaped by how the body is organised.
Posture, balance, and movement are not random;
they are the result of how your nervous system, muscles,
and structure work together.
In both sport and riding, small changes in how
the body is held and used
can create significant changes in performance,
efficiency, and communication.
“When you know what you are doing, you can do what you want.”
Moshe Feldenkrais
This is not about doing more
Most approaches focus on strengthening, correcting, or improving performance through effort.
This course takes a different approach.
It explores how the body already functions
and how awareness of that function changes everything.
You will begin to understand:
-
how posture influences movement and fatigue
-
how stabiliser and mobiliser systems interact
-
how the pelvis shapes alignment and balance
-
how the body compensates without you realising
This is where performance
begins to change;
not through force, but through
understanding.
How you will Learn:
Through developing awareness of your own body, posture, and internal organisation and how this influences function, fatigue and control
Through recognising how breath, alignment, and nervous system state influence movement
Through understanding how stabiliser and mobiliser systems coordinate within the body
Through observing how small compensations affect balance, efficiency, and performance
Through learning to recognise patterns of tension, holding, and release within your own body
Why body awareness changes performance more effectively than effort
Practical ways to self-manage and support your body
This is not about doing more; it is about
learning to feel what is already happening.
Who This Course Is For
-
Riders wanting to understand their body before applying it to the horse
-
Sportsmen wanting to improve performance through awareness, not force
-
Anyone experiencing tension, imbalance, or inefficiency in movement
This is not a fitness course
This course does not focus on strength or conditioning.
It focuses on understanding how your body works
so that movement becomes more efficient, balanced, and responsive.
Prerequisite: Sentient Science Course 1 recommended regardless of animal connection
Next Step: the Sentient Seat
Once you understand your own body,
you begin to understand how it is received by the horse.
This course is aimed at riders and jam-packed with exercies for you and your horse.
This course forms the foundation for
The Sentient Seat: Anatomical Foundations of Connection
Who will be your Course Facilitator?
That would be me.
I am a qualified physiotherapist with over two decades of experience working with the human body alongside years of working closely with animals and the relationship between the two.
In this course, I draw from both clinical practice and lived experience.
I have worked with riders and individuals across a wide range of conditions from pain and injury to imbalance, fatigue, and chronic compensation patterns.
What has become clear through this work is that the body is never random. It is always organised even when that organisation is no longer serving you.
This course is not about fixing the body.
It is about learning to understand it.
Alongside my professional work, my own journey has been one of deep learning through confusion, challenge, and ultimately a profound shift into awareness.
That journey informs how I teach.
I will guide you to begin recognising what is happening within your own body and how that directly influences the way you are experienced by your animal.
This is where connection changes.
Not through technique,
but through awareness.
